We want you on stage - Open Stage at #bbuzz

As Call for Papers and reviews are done: Thank you for over 120 submissions. We received far more proposals than can reasonably fit into two days of conference time. Nonetheless we want to give you the opportunity to present a short talk or do a workshop. This time there will be no lightning talks. Instead we offer you an Open Stage to share your ideas and thoughts with the #bbuzz audience. Those presentation slots run in parallel to the regular schedule and are handed out on a first come first serve basis.

Maybe you missed the submission deadline, have an idea that does not quite fit into a full slot, or come up with a topic during the conference. Don't worry! Use the Open Space as a stage and present your topic or project anyway. We also invite you to use the Open Stage slots creatively and create your very own session format not necessarily involving a speaker teaching the audience some technology using a pre-defined slide deck to help the conference by increasing diversity.

We are organising the Open Stage via the conference wiki. Please create an account and feel free to contribute to the Berlin Buzzwords topics. The Open Stage shall be a place for spontaneous action. It also will be public which means people who don't have a ticket for Berlin Buzzwords have access to the stage. Talks are moderated by session chairs who will enforce the slot lengths rigorously. Furthermore companies have also the opportunity for sponsored talks beside the regular conference program.

Increasing Buzzwords Diversity

Photo: Claudia Brückner

It is our goal to make Buzzwords more diverse!

Therefore we are actively recruiting female speakers for Berlin Buzzwords and try to support the future generation of developers.

After her Keynote on nurturing open source communities in 2012 Leslie Hawthorn - is part of our Program Committee and the contact person for female speakers who are thinking of submitting a talk. So, if you’re looking for help preparing your abstract, would like to learn more about the conference or are looking for advice on making your speaking engagements more effective, feel free to reach out to Leslie. Check her blogpost about Berlin Buzzwords.

As well, we would like to point out the great blog We are all awesome! by Tiffany Conroy. Here is a quote from her: "Are you a woman who wants more female speakers at developer conferences? I have a quick fix for you: become one. Think of the other female developers you know. Do you expect those women to step forward as speakers and not yourself? The only person you control is you, and so I’m asking you: become a speaker."

Therfore: Our call 4 submissions is open until the end of this week. If you have not submitted yet, please do so!

Additionally we are planing to offer workshops for beginners to support the future generation!
We will keep you updated!

Our 1st Keynote Speaker at Berlin Buzzwords 2013

Today, we are happy to announce our 1st Keynote Speaker for this years Buzzwords: Ariel Waldman

We are looking forward to her keynote: The Hacker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Don't panic: the next big science revolution isn't just for asteroid miners or CERN scientists. Just as science fiction has often shown the way to future inventions, the act of hacking is now generating prototypes that act as footholds for future explorations, discoveries and epiphanies in science. This presentation takes you on a tour of our universe (from black holes and dark matter to exoplanets and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence) and shows you how you can actively explore the final frontier through getting excited and making things.

Ariel Waldman is the founder of Spacehack.org, a directory of ways to participate in space exploration, and the global instigator of Science Hack Day, an event that brings together scientists, technologists, designers and people with good ideas to see what they can create in one weekend. She is also an interaction designer, a research affiliate at Institute For The Future, and an advisor for the SETI Institute‘s radio show, Big Picture Science. Previously, she worked at NASA’s CoLab program whose mission was to connect communities inside and outside NASA to collaborate. Ariel has also been a sci-fi movie gadget columnist for Engadget and a digital anthropologist at VML. In 2008, she was named one of the top 50 most influential individuals in Silicon Valley.

Recently, Ariel was appointed as a National Academy of Sciences (NAS) committee member of a congressionally-requested study on the future of human spaceflight. The Committee on Human Spaceflight has been tasked with a study to review the long-term goals, core capabilities, and direction of the U.S. human spaceflight program and make recommendations to enable a sustainable U.S. human spaceflight program. In 2012, she authored a white paper on Democratized Science Instrumentation that was presented to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Ariel has been awarded two grants for her work on Science Hack Day from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

Let's make Berlin Buzzwords more interactive!

As you know 98% of our Berlin Buzzwords talks are getting in through the call 4 sumbissions. And of course, we want to keep it like this, because it makes sure that you get to see talks that you're truly interested in, tackling problems you're dealing with!

But we know as well that sitting and listening to talks for two whole days can be tiring after a while - however interesting and valuable the topic and speaker might be. Therefore we want to make Berlin Buzzwords more interactive by bringing in other formats additional to the traditional speech!

Since we are doing this for the first time and it will be little bit experimental, we decided to keep the call 4 submissions as you are used to it for now - that means, you're still submitting talks under the three tags search, store and scale.

But additionally we'd like to invite you to submit sessions that are of a different format - think hacking workshops, coding sessions etc. for this year's Berlin Buzzwords.

After we moved Buzzwords to a bigger location, we will provide an additional room for your ideas and interactive formats and of course you get a free ticket if you run a workshop or hackathon in our interactive program!

Do you have an idea? Please get in touch with us via info [at] berlinbuzzwords.de and share it!
